Frontier Faces (While We Sleep) evolution
I first wrote it late night on guitar, didn't know what the purpose of the piece then..I simply was prompted by a long time buddy, Dennis Ungar to use a capo on the 4th fret with DADGAD tuning, I didn't know what to call the piece yet, then I shared this video with my dear friend Darrel Mc ElMurry, a great guitarist who introduced me to alternate tunings, He said it reminded him of a march with imagery of a father who is reminiscing a son lost at war.
And it was around this pandemic time that demanded so much of those who had to continue serving us, healthcare workers, public servants, grocery clerks and many more on the trenches, hence the term front liners. So, I went that direction. In a way, the piece evolved with some form of guidance.

I then brought the piece to my jam mates, Robert Herzbrun and Hoytus Rolen, jamming on this piece gave it kind of energy that I wanted to capture in the recorded version, I was already working on sequence with my musical partner, Marcel Berteaux, that had some half-time sections, but after this weekend jam I changed the arrangement to have more of a live performance feel to it.
This was followed by working with my students , Nihal Nazeem, Nick Brandis, and Rohan Ayyar who are brilliant musicians that I worked with on this piece Stretch
We did the production of tracks remotely as the shelter in place times called for. Some had to learn to do audio recording with computers , file formats and sharing on the cloud. We did communications via Zoom to discuss arrangements and they also sent me videos of their performance. My good friend's son, Zed Millette played trumpet. Robert Herzbrun on percussions and got great contributions from Pete Grant , a world class pedal steel player who has done sessions with big acts and TV shows all in all the the outcome really is a sum of the parts as I always believe when art is left to take a life of its own, and deem myself as part of an ensemble, it garners momentum and things seem to fall into place. It's a beautiful thing when this happens, it drives its sense of purpose., in this case this project culminated to the final form of expression .~ Frontier Faces (While We Sleep...)
